Took my buddy Jerry and his son Tommy out for Jerry's B-Day Saturday. Jerry had been out on the kayak one time before with me on a lobster hunt. His son had never been on a kayak and had never caught a fish before.

I had my 2 boys with me on my ride. We launched out of Shelter Island around 1230. The tide was slowing down so the bite was slow. We drifted around and looked at the big boats at the yacht club while soaking some frozen sardines. We decided to get out into the channel to see if we can get on a bite. I didn't want to get too far out into the harbor as it was their first time on the yak together and the wind was picking up and the traffic looked kind of busy. Shortly after we started a fresh drift I hear Jerry and Tommy yelling "we're caught on something!" Tommy frantically tried to real up but it was way too much for him so Jerry tried pulling it up. The set up he was using was a starter set from Sears but it handled you load just fine. Tommy had caught his first fish ever and it was on a kayak.Attachment 930
Even though this was the only fish we caught this day it was a great birthday for Jerry as he got to see his son catch his first fish. This is a day that will stick with them for the rest of their lives. I am glad that I, and my boys, were there to witness it.

While everyone was dropping sardines I was throwing Plastic. I had a few bumps but nothing found the hook.

You got me worried when I saw that sculpin, as I thought the season for them is closed. Thanks for making me brush up on the regs :).

Where is that with the homes in the background?

It's all about making memories Paul.. Good for you, and thanks for the report.

The street you take to get to that area with the houses is Kellog St. (either that or Lawrence St.), it is off of Rosecrans. There is a nice little beach there to set up your yak. Its also only about 20 minutes away from the bait barge.
