Setting up for LJ

Making my first trip to LJ this friday and I want your opinions on how I should set up.

I only have 2 "heavy" combos.
1. TLD Star 20/40 on a 6.5ft heavy spooled with 40lb mono topshot
2. Daiwa SLX20 on an 8ft teramar heavy spooled with 20lb mono topshot

I figure I can use the first set up for working the bottom and the second for surface/yoyo.

The questions:

1. Do these setups make sense for targeting yellowtail/wsb? If not, what should I change?

2. If the game plan is to work the kelp, should I rip out the mono from the second setup and use straight braid?

30 - 40 lb Mono for winter yo yo
Straight braid for kelp fishing.

It would not be easy to turn a big fish with the #20

Look through the "Information" link above for a check list, and some general info on wintertime fishing.

I like 65# green spectra with a flourescent bead to a swivel then 4' of 25# flouro to a ringed hook for WSB. I've caught a 45# and 46# WSB with that rig, it's like a lucky hat for me now.

20# mono will work in open water but if you are near the kelp you'll want to put on the brakes before a fish runs for cover and the 20# might not hold.

Good luck out there.

Thanks for the input guys. I think I will rip out the 20lb test and put on a short 25lb flouro. Hopefully I can post a report using one of those yt and/or wsb smilies tomorrow.

I forgot to mention when targeting WSB I usually use a 2oz slider above the swivel and bead to get the bait deeper. Sometimes I'll use a 4oz if the current is strong.

Thanks for the tips. Hopefully they work as well for me tomorrow.

Hey flip4i... In order to find out if the tips are truly of good use, you'd actually have to go out fishing (like TODAY!!!) to find out. :you_rock: (NOT!!!)

FYI to all Big Water's Edge Patrons... I'm just pullin' flip4i's chain because we had planned to go out fishing together in LJ this morning, but somebody forgot to wake-up.

LOL, I did wake up. Just the wrong time... Dude, we'll go when you can go. Just let me know...
