Gear for 3/4 Day Cattle Boat
 

I'm taking my dad out on the 3/4 day boat from Pt. Loma on Monday. He can't handle a day on the Yak, but wants to get in on some of the good recent fishing.

Does anybody know if I can use my YT setups for the open water trip. It looks like YFT, and Dorado are a possibility.

I was thinking about taking my two Shimano TD15s. One is @ 65# spectra an the other @ 50# spectra. Both on Penn Jigmaster rods.

I have never made the trip and am looking for advice.

never used spectra but we caught our limits of YT and YFT and Dodos couple weeks back just using 20lb and 30 lb mono. The Islander with captain Shane is the boat we went on, unfortunately all their 1.5 days are all booked to end o season.:reel:

Forget about spectra, concentrate on what will get you bit.

Take a couple outfits each, 20#, 30#, and maybe 50#...

If they are hammering anything, go with the big boys. If they are line shy, you may have to go down to 20#, may lose some, but at least you're getting bit.

Get a nice assortment of hooks, and a pole that you can cast the bait further than anyone else. If your bait doesn't get hit right away, grab another, there's plenty.

Grab the bait that is hardest to catch, handle him gently, no red marks on his face...

And remember, it's not about you catching, it's about him catching.:sifone:

Forget the braided line. #20 will be fine, #30 max. Good advice on the live bait by Tman. Keep spare hooks in your pocket and be able to tie them on quickly with a Palomar knot. Keep your line in the water as much as possible.
I prefer lighter rigs for cattle boats so you can cast your bait farther out than anyone else and make sure the bait fish swims away from the boat. If you are beyond the maze of everybody else's lines and hooks; you'll have better luck. The fish can be line shy as well; especially with twenty or more lines in the water; make sure they can't see yours. If you get in a tangle; you're screwed, no matter what line you use.
