favorite avet for yellows in the kelp
I am looking at a few new setup options for fishing for yellow tail in the kelp with bait i already have a custom wrapped rod and now i am just looking at reels i wanted to buy an avet or shimano but i am not sure what size and line capacity
thanks for the help |
I like my SX 2 Speed. the MXJ is a nice set up as well. You can't go wrong with the SX.

I have both an SX and an MX. They are both great reels. The SX is my favorite.

SX Raptor!!! more drag than the standard sx and holds more line.

None of them...The Avet's are too fancy for the kayak. Use a Newell!

depends on what you want out of it.
Avet is awesome, doesn't do so well with constant kayak water damage. More of a boat reel though for me. Sx or Mx for live bait. Jx with 40# works good for yo yo. Wouldn't do it another way as far as avet. I think there are better reels for kayaking in general though. Not a bad choice, just more robust ones. Two speed is nice, but doesn't hold up well to salt damage. |

I have a MXJ & MXJ 2 speed. I choose not to use this reels while kayak fishing because I have found that their clicker tension is not very controlable (it's not strong enough to hold back a mac or horse dine from running wild while trolling). I decided on Shimano Trinidad 14's/16's (Torium model will work as well. Also Daiwa Saltist models). I went with the Trinidads because you can control the pressure on the clicker, for trolling if needed. A few notes: I bought all my Trinidad models used for around $200 (no need to pay full price). I use my Avet reels on PB and Chart boats. This is just my opinion, others have their own Thanks! |
