LJ 4/24 limit o' WSB
Not from a kayak and not from a boat and not before sunset - truly from the Edge of the Big Water, in the dark and, on plastic. Shhhh.
6 lbs, 12 oz; 28 1/4 inches, and no picture yet as my home internet is down. btw, I think the next kayak WSB party will begin around Cinco de Mayo. EDIT : finally got my internet back. http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y11...assA042406.jpg http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y11...assC042406.jpg |
Patiently waiting to see the monster ghost...
At least u had a line in the agua. |
Nice Larry, were you getting shorts as well?
|
Andy, I carefully released one short wsb about 22 inches that evening.
I was out there last night (Tues) after sunset poking around, and there was an acre of bait jumping around after dark, just absolutely "teeming", with some big splashes and whole schools of shimmering silver bait flying into the air at times. (A beach house had their spotlights on). What a sight - looked like Tidelands during a solid grunion run. Should at least be some halibut in the skinnywater about now. Very cool to watch .... but I couldn't get bit on plastic, so I broke out the treble and was able to only nail one 8" smelt?grunion in all that volume of baitfish. Not sure if they were all the same or not. This was right at high tide (key). The bait shook the hook on the first cast  of course, then the spotlights went out, and it was suddenly pitch black - so I headed home. Just too much bait. I love spring cycles and have noticed this same pattern being close to certain LJ beaches over the years. It will be the same fishy deal here around May 9; the pre-full-moon run-up to the grunion run. I'll be kayaking MUCH DEEPER WATER at that time. |
nice, I wanna see the lil guy!! I've got a spot in long beach where the 20-30" WSB go WIDE almost every night.. they are fun on the bass gear..
|
Pics posted above.....going fishing now.
|
nice lil c-bass! those are the tasty ones

Nice sea trout Larry!
You know you are blessed when you catch fish like that right down the street. Go team Cabela! Ken PS, don't forget the head. |
Pulling a legal one from the surf is as good as gettin' a 30 pounder draggin a mackeral. Cool Larry, spectra on the spinner. I don't know how you fish there. Every time I go, there is a ton of grass and kelp in the surf, drives me nuts.

Nice Coho!

Nice sunset stroll tonight. I got four calicos and three short wsb's this evening, on plastics and all released.
The gear is unique for sure. I have an 11 1/2 foot rod loaded with 30 lb spectra, it's more like flippin' for largemouth bass in heavy cover than "tossing plastics", and when a 2 lb calico dives into 15 lbs of seagrass, you're glad you got the TWO-SPEED  ....... well, at least the heavy line. Andy, c'mon .... the sea grass is the best part!!! It's FUN. Its actually required for the bite to get going on this beach, so I just fish rigs that won't catch the grass, which makes for an interesting challenge. If a wave full of that seagrass breaks onto your line, YOU'RE DONE, even with 30 pound spectra. It's THE BLOB of the sea. btw, dropshotting will work around here too, esp from the kayak. Some pix from today's Adventure. http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y11...nset042606.jpg http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y11...nset042606.jpg http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y11...nset042606.jpg http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y11...nset042606.jpg http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y11...nset042606.jpg AND THESE SHOULD BE COMING SOON (YUM!) http://www.larryl.com/images/2004Spr...eltA050604.jpg |
Sweet pickins from the shore. Well done.
|
Nice catching from the shore Larry. Different variety than what's easily accessible in North County.

What kinda bait ya soaking for that hali in the last pic? I've got a new 11' setup I've been dying to try out in La Jolla at Marine Street :D
|
Got that 30" halibut in on a dead smelt, early May 2004.. I start keeping my kayaking bait for the freezer about now. Grunion work too, and can be easier to catch  by the handful. Marine is a good area, look for areas of current along the beach at high tide that will clear out the debris to allow fishing the bait. Otherwise it's very tough. I fish 95% weedless plastics though...

very cool larry! i met your brother today out at windansea he was getting some sick barrels. im guessing i know where youve been fishing on the beaches so ill try em out soon.
