One Sabiki and 8 oz weight

My first quality sized Sabiki fish!!! 50lb WSB!!!
I launched just before 6pm and went out to make bait with my friend Andrew, I took a picture of Andrew's best catch at the launch.
Making bait was easy with lots of quality greenies. In about 70-80 feet of water a couple hundred yards outside the buoy, I had the sabiki down about 20-30 feet and felt a solid pull on the baitrig. Because I was surrounded by 4 sea lions, I first figured one was stealing bait (but I didn't feel any?) and maybe got hooked but it felt fishy and my 20lb P-line (thanks Mark) was too tight and the 15-30lb ugly stick bent too far. The fish paused and I instantly released drag pressure, it was set for ripping the rig out of kelp from the last trip. Open water, kayak getting towed, on the SABIKI!! Couldn't believe it! I was very careful to lift slowly and reel down while being mindful of the slowly approaching kelp line. Started lifting harder and making line after about 10 minutes. Kelp was too close. Fish came to color within 100 feet of the kelp. By 7:30 I had a nice gaff shot and one excited kayak fisherman screaming a victory cry!!
Check out the sabiki hook in the top lip!!!!

It's just what happens when the macks get bigger. Very cool.

Nice fish James.

I had a similarly strange catch on the sabiki yesterday, but it was not as rewarding as yours.

Yesterday while making bait I was reeling in a stringer of macks when 3 Calicos nailed the crap out of them.
The sabiki came up with 3 nice size Calicos on it.
All the hooks were bent out.:)

You've got skills, James!

After hooking many a trophy on the sabiki set-up---I can count on one finger how many I've landed .

Patience :cheers1:.

That is quite a task on a sabiki! You've got some skills to keep the hook from bending/breaking. good job!

I like to think that using a lead head for weight is added insurance for those pesky bycatch....

It took me breaking two promar sabiki rods to figure out that light tackle ain't the way to go when making bait.
All the big fish I've hooked by a sabiki are all very vivid in my mind for some reason. Maybe its because of the sinking feeling I got each time that told me I had no chance:mad:

Killer fish, bitchin story:cheers1:

Whats up with the 8 oz torpedo :D trying to hit the bait in the head and stun them

Never landed any sabiki fish.........amazing catch!

I am sure that it does not compare to hooking a WSB on a Sabiki but it gets a little interesting when a school of bonito zeros in on your bait setup.

I had three on at one time once. Imagine a bunch of slimy two pound fish flopping around the yak while the sabiki hooks that did not have fish on them are flying all over the place trying to find a place on your body to sink into.

No fun.
