Maiden Voyage Questions
 

Going to head out this weekend to test my sea legs on the kayak. I've been out to the bay numerous times and now it's time for some LJ love. I've got some questions if ya'll don't mind.

Targeted species: Hali, YT, WSB.

Reels/Line/Rods -
I think I'm set on Reels
-Daiwa Sealine-X 50 SHA (no line)
-Daiwa Sealine-X 20 SHV (20# mono)
-Penn 500 (20# mono)

I have a 7' Offshore Angler (20-50) paired with my Sealine 50 but I need some help with what line to spool. I figured this would be my live bait set up unless anyone feels this would be better used for another application.

As for the other two reels, I was thinking about picking up a couple of 7' Sabre Strokers (married, on a budget) in the 20-50 range to pair them with.

Terminal tackle/Lures -
Need help with hooks, weights, lures. Targeted species: Hali, YT, WSB.

I know you all are tried and true fisherman and I don't mean to intrude on your hard work but if you can help a fellow long time angler out I would be most appreciative.

Most people I know use heavier line, especially if fishing near the kelp. For bait rods, I have 50 or 65 pound spectra with a 25 to 35 pound test flouro. Some guys go even heavier on the leader.

For jig sticks and open water bait fishing your can probably get away with lighter line but in the kelp, spectra is king.

What he said. You can use the #20 from the SL 20 as backing for the SL 50, then fill both with spectra to fluro leader.

have to agree with what's been said, a spectra setup will save you when fishing near kelp.
