newport harbor fishing
:you_rock: Has anyone fished NPH/CDM lately, any info or updates on where to go or what lures to bring would be greatly appreciated. THANKS :reeling:

I've been fishin the harbor a lot the past couple weeks. Yesterday was real good. Legal 'but, few short 'buts, and lots of spotties and sandies.
Grubs and 3-4" swimbaits have been working well. Light line and a rod with a soft tip helps. Structure's always best, but when the tide's rippin you'll find fish out in the open. Good tides this month. Should be productive all month long. |
If you go,you can also Try a drop shot rig with gulp jerk shads in new penny or nuclear chicken.8# test is about right.
|
Don't forget a crankbait
Lipped crankbaits work well in NPH for me. I have not been in a while but spotties tore it up.
|
I was waiting for the mess that the rains the last couple of weeks dumped in the harbor to clear-out, so it sounds like it is a good time to get out there.
Warbait jigs, crankbaits, and spinner baits have always worked well for me in the harbor. Fishing the tidal changes and structure are key properties to a productive day. Kevin |
I did pretty well last week all on drop shot rigs on the pilings

ohana turned me onto the crank bait fishing... kill it in NPH on any species. i fish 8lb test for the bass as well. :cheers1: |
I got dragged 200 yrds by a bat ray on 8# test before I lost him to a mooring can.I hooked a sea lion on 20# test and was pulled at breakneck speed until I thumbed the spool and broke him off
Be careful with the juvi-WSB.they can be thick at times. |
Newport Bay report: rain....Spotties!

Thanks all for the tips on fishing Newport bay. Here's the better half of the RedSledTeam...Roman was on fire! But the rain cooled him down after 4 hours in the wind and rain! But there were a few brief periods of calm, enough to catch a few Spotties! :reel:

Golden!

Where did you launch? I've tried the area around 15th street, but the palce your in looks different.
|
The Newport Aquatic Center. It's a very easy launch and a little over a mile to the
PCH bridge. |
Great report. I wish my kids liked to fish.
|
The kid looks like a pro...

Kid - Pro
And he eats like one too!:drool5::eating:
:you_rock:FYI- All "spotties" were caught on plastics and returned to their homes to fight again another day.....until the MLPA closures go into effect that is. :reddy: |

Can you park your car there and go kayaking on your own kayak, without the aquatic center towing your car away? I usually just park in balboa island and go kayaking from there there since parking is free. |
ok to park
We went into the Center and asked the office about parking. We were given the the "ok" to park and use the beach, maybe because of the absence of people due to the rain? Our polite and positive attitude may have helped also.

1. not to park OR launch from under the bridge "this is designated SWK area" 2. Launch but not park 3. wished a fruitful and safe paddle. |
Aquatic Center does not close their gates at night and I have been there past 11pm. No problem parking and launching there. PLEASE be respectful and clean so that it stays this way.
The guys under the bridge at the Kayak rental place (they lease their space) told me that they have no probs with launching your kayak there but that the owner of the property does not allow you to park there. :D |
