Hobie outback
 

If all goes well i will have mine very soon. Does anybody have advice or disagree with this idea?

I'm pretty happy with my Outback. I've been out about a half a dozen times so far. Some days were an effortless 5+ miles according to the GPS.

I think the turbo fins and the sailing rudder were pretty solid upgrades.

Only one regret so far ... I don't like the Hobie rod leashes. My hooks have got stuck in them a couple times. I'm going to replace them eventually with that rubber coated wire style of leash.

I said I loved my Outback before I sold it and bought a Revo. The Outback is too slow, the Revo is much quicker and agile.

the outback was the right choice for me, comfort and stability over maybe slight speed.
you want more speed use turbo fins. love my outback!
try getting more space on your revo. :D get what feels right for you and dont look back aahhh outback :)

For me, the big killer on the outback is the hull slap which is just plain annoying in any kind of light chop. The outback also get much slower the choppier/windier it gets.

I have an Outback and for a short while a Revo. My thoughts are as follows:

The Outback:
Pros;
+has a larger, more comfortable cockpit
+A bit more stable
+DRYER, no wet ass all day
+Temp storage for food tackle etc...(side trays)
+Rod holder positions (no need to add any ram mounts etc...) All are flush.

Cons;
-Paddling sucks, sides are high, doesn't track well without the rudder ( in kelp).
-high sides catch a bit more wind (not too big an issue)
-A little slower than the Revo, about 15-20%
-Hull slap in choppy conditions, Not too big a deal. (I stay dry)

The Revo:
Pros;
+Longer faster easier to paddle
+Much less hull slap, WET


Cons;

Im not huge but I take up most of the cockpit, 6'2" 190 lbs.

-The water bottle hits my leg (annoying)
-The rudder control is slightly under my leg (annoying and sometimes hard to get to)
-WET ASS all day. very F' in annoying
-Not quite as stable but still very good
Much Smaller area for storage of tackle, food etc..


These are just personal observations. Others may agree or disagree.

Just be very happy that you are peddling a Hobie, it could be alot worse.

For the record, I have an Outback and Revo and they are both great yaks. However, I ride my Revo about 95% of the time. I just need to find a way to fit a Pro Angler in. :idea:

The only advise I have is, go in to OEX and demo them both , You'll be happy that you did.

love my outback for the ocean, but i use my pro angler for flat water. both are great fishing platforms.:reel:

just sold my Outback and bought Kaijuu's "wet" Revo. I did not experience the wet butt thing...on my first trip. The Revo is considerably faster but the peddle work (with the super turbo's) definitely put a hurt on my old arse knees...Seemed as stable too in windy choppy fresh water...Both are GREAT yaks to move around in...

Cure for "wet butt syndrome" = waders. You can also open up one of the seat scuppers to drain out sitting water.

I'm a yak newb myself, and I'm loving my Outback. The extra stability is appreciated as I'm still learning my way around the boat. The molded in furniture pretty much means you can hit the water without additional mods. But yeah, test drive both to be sure.

i was out at la jolla last saturday and i noticed that i was not able to go straight on my outback going slow, but when i sped up i was able to make some corrections with my rudder.
this got me thinking that i may need to buy a sailing rudder but not sure if that would make a big difference or not. but that is one thing that is on my list to dos.
i like my outback can't say anything about the revo, but my buddy matt has one. he sometimes wished that he had the outback simply for the more deck space on the top for fishing poles. the revo has limited space fyi. i really like that i have inside storage space on the sides. i have added magnets to keep my tackle box from slipping around.
either one you choose, you can't really go wrong. i watch some others who paddle and i am just happy that i am peddling and not paddling b/c i wouldn't enjoy it.

If you have an Outback, definitely get the sailing rudder. It makes a huge difference. On the revo, the difference isn't as great.

I recently added a sailing rudder to my Revo. For me it made a significant difference in holding the course when going into the wind or waves. For about $20 it is a very good investment.

The Turbo Fins, on the other hand are a must have. I waited a couple of years before upgrading. They make a huge difference on the Revo. I bet the same applies to the Outback.

yes, i too got the turbos and they were well worth the $90 that i spent. stinkymatt has the revo and his cadence to mine was 2 strokes to my 1. since then he got his turbos :biggrinjester:

Hey Hobie experts, is the weight cap on a Hobie the max that it will still be useable at (ie. Wilderness Systems yaks) or the max until it sinks ( ie. Malibus) ???
