folks kayak to catalina all the time, that's 24+ miles. physically it's possible to kayak a long ways.
But kirkdavis brings up a lot good points...

Went to la Jolla today. Epic conditions! Sunny, calm, smooth. Tons of bait, tons of birds, at least 8 grey whales moving about. But the water was an ugly green and the current was slow. Caught...
