I carry my old humminbird VHF all the time - it is only 4 watts (only good for line of sight communication), does not float and is not waterproof.
Later this month I'll be upgrading to an Icom M36. It has a 6 watt output (the highest wattage a handheld typically has - it's most important feature in my book) and it has a waterproof IPX7 rating - rated for 30 minutes submerged to 1 meter, which is good for when I take the occasional swim in the surf getting back in, and it floats should it ever become separated from my pfd.
