because it sucked! 
Around 5 AM it felt like 12 kts and had me debating going to the pier, that and it looked like the lights were not over the water. Mike Knott was going to head west, a couple others bailed. By the time I parked and was ready the wind seemed to have died a bit, so I hit the pier, the lights were in the middle, nothing but a smelt. Trolled the sabiki and picked up a double and another and another. On my way across the canyon and it started getting snotty. Finally at the yellow can, it took me about an hour to get even with the hotel, 20-25 kts. Did one speed drift back to the reserve and headed in. Surf was sloppy, but surprisingly small for all that NW wind. I think I surfed some open water waves that were bigger than at the beach, tomorrow looks better, I may have to try again.
