Three years in the making...

Two years ago, a buddy asked me to take him kayakfishing. So we launch at o'dark:30. I show him how to get bait at the pier. We paddle out to the kelp, he drops his first mac and lands a 50#+ WSB. Darn. Maybe I should take up guiding instead. Skunk season for me.

Last year try again, and again another skunk season. Darn.

So I start the season again this year. I land last week and a guy on the beach tells me the two guys coming in before me each had a WSB. Darn. Then he looks me straight in the eye and said "Your turn is next". I put that in the bank.

Easy launch. First stop for bait and the tank is filled with picture perfect greenbacks. I check in with a friendly spearo who gives me the depth info I need. Pin on my mac, change to my new game plan and whamo, off goes the reel. All the tips and tricks I've picked up are now sitting in my mind when I need them: keep the pressure on, don't horse him in, let the spectra do the work. Up it comes, slide the gaff between the gill plates and no mo' skunk.

Thanks to Brian and OEX for the pix. Be sure you visit them at the Fred Hall show.
