Had a quick biz meeting in Bird Rock this morning and planned on meting up with an old friend for a mid morning run. He leaves a VM that 2 veteran anglers just pulled off the water and were complaining vehemently about the lousy conditions and cold water. 62?
I told Kevin - "One man's Floor and let's go get a workout."
We jammed over to the pier because I wanted greenies and hadn't been finding any quantity straight out. Made a bucket full in short order and slow trolled SW. Once passed the canyon ledge in about 130' the baits get antsy. Slow rips. I turn around and see Kevin back aways having a Pecid AC moment with the tight swell. I slow drift while waiting for him to catch up and am hearing this slow and steady rip ZZZ rip ZZZ. Nervous or caught on floating kelp? Reach around to clear the line, turn 4 cranks and load up. I just spooled some fresh 20# flouro and wanted to play this one out nice and easy. No horsing in. Towed me around in a few circles, headed out, then turned and towed me back in. Two deep runs straight down and 15+ minutes latter - color. AWESOME sight - put me a real ZEN state. Ah- WSB bliss. She rolls on side - gaff the gill plate and in the lap for a bear hug.
39# on the OEX Certified Scale. Sure hope the record holds - I've been eyeing that Tiburon Rod featured in this contest all month.
