It doesn't affect the action at all. Use thin wire hooks like Owner Flyliner's.
I used to use this rig a lot for short biting halibut. I was always afraid of gut hooking a bass but it never happened. Now I just use them in freshwater for trout and have caught bass and crappie on 'em too.
I tie mine like this....
What you need:
3" swimbait
10" of 8 lb Power Pro
2" sewing needle
Size 6 Owner Mosquito hook
3/16 Owner Darter head
Thread the bait on the lead head
Tie a Palomar knot to the trap hook and a double over hand knot to the needle
Thread the needle through the top center tail of the swimbait.
Push straight through to the hole where the hook of the lead head exits the swimbait
Pull the needle out with pliers until the eye of the hook hits the tail then push the hook into place with your fingers.
Cut line from needle, loop the line twice through the eye of the leadhead, then tie a 4 turn San Diego knot.
Grab the trap hook with pliers and the tag end with your other hand and pull snug.
