The Escalator!

The rip tide (or escalator) is a great way to speed launch through the surf zone and is a preferred method for me if available.

But....

1. As mentioned, the current can make steering funky. Avoid using the rudder if problems occur. Use paddle to steer. Keep the nose forward!

2. Note, any surf can have lateral currents that create similar sudden steering problems.

3. The outer waves coming into a rip can stand-up higher quickly. Use good timing....but...mostly CHARGE! It's hard to "wait in the surf" with that escalator pushing you at them.

4. You should practice kayaking in surf sans fishing gear if this is to be your thing. Be able to withstand sideways waves to some degree. Learn to brace.
