Correct. With larger areas or if you just want to be in the ballpark you can use your FF in conjunction with lining up landmarks at the foreground and background perpendicular to each other. I know people have done that in LJ to figure out when they're out of the reserve.

Oh, forgot to mention. If you don't have a GPS and you have a smartphone. Buy the navionics app. I've used it before I had a GPS. A little bit tough if you don't have a mount and you're having to hold it in your hand.
