Lead Fishing Tackle Ban Bill is Gutted and Dead for Now.
Assembly Bill 2787, legislation that aimed to ban lead fishing tackle (50 grams or less), is dead - for now. Assemblyman Bill Quirk's bill first sought to ban lead tackle, then it became a study and now, was gutted to become an energy bill.
This is a great victory for anglers. However, be assured the bill will return in the 2019 legislative session.
Anglers owe a special thanks to a broad based coalition of associations representing anglers, boating and small businesses for AB 2787's defeat. Also, more than 6,000 California anglers signed the "Stop the Fishing Tackle Ban" petition. So, thank you friends.

California Sportfishing League released independent analysis that reveals that California’s costly fishing license is likely a major contributor to the state’s declining fishing participation rate and is economically unsustainable for the California Department of Fish and Wildlife.

12-Month Fishing Bills Update
Assembly Bill 986:

AB 986, James Gallagher, aims to increase fishing license sales and revenue by making an annual fishing license valid for 12-months from the date of purchase. This bill also discounts annual fishing licenses for American veterans by 25%, and by 50% for veterans that have a 50% or greater service-connected disability.

Status: Passed out of the Senate Veterans Committee unanimously and now advances to the Senate Appropriations Committee.

Senate Bill 518:
SB 518, Tom Berryhill, (formerly SB 187) aims to increase California's fishing participation rate and economic activity by creating an annual license that is valid a full 12-months from the date of purchase with a auto-renewal option. Today, SB 518 enjoys the support of an impressive coalition of state and local organizations representing small business, labor, local government, travel, hospitality, marina and lake operators, as well as the boating industry.

Status: Is placed on the Assembly Appropriations Committee's suspense file.
