This method works well and are easier to get out if you need to change things up. Drill your pilot holes, apply the goop, and make sure you get the goop over the holes. Use the self threading screws that don't need a nut, and secure them. As the goop dries it creates a seal and from what I've found it acts like a lock nut. I don't use the rivets much anymore.
