Check your latest tide charts to see what the beach and open water conditions are gonna be like. Although launching before or at daybreak is customary you might wanna see if you really wanna break through 4-5ft+ shore breakers (if conditions are like that at that time of the day, sometimes the shore is pretty calm too). It all depends when you want to go out either weekday or weekend, just do your tide chart homework just to avoid a waste of gas, time, gear loss and your safety. Two weekends ago shore breaks at 6:50am were that high ‘5ft’ then mid last week and this past weekend things have chilled (0.5ft), so launch wisely.
As for yellowtail, last year I got the opportunity to have some boat time on the “Seaforth SAN DIEGO” doing day trips to the Coronado Islands twice. Our time of arrival was anywhere from 8:50am and 10am, after that point once people started throwing live bait or throwing iron, bites started coming in throughout the day. So, there’s no exact time when there’s a better probability to catch something, just that the conditions have to be right. Weather forecast, ‘water temp/ conditions’, time of year, bait/ lures. Check out other sites like ‘SD Fish’ and ‘Bloodydecks’ to get an idea of how boaters are doing and that will help you get a good piece of mind.
