Using the geartrac allows you to adjust the location on the trap ease and any other accessories that you will be adding. If you go without the track and mount the deck mount directly to the boards you won't have the ability to adjust it without removing it and reinstalling it.
If you get the geartrac (which I strongly recommend) mount it on the outside of the boards, mounting it on the inside will give you a springboard effect.
