I got this rumor second hand from some UC Northridge Cedros archeological work through Jeff on the Island.
Interesting side story.
Makes my think its plausible. Prof. told us the trees are squat stunted cedars growing up high as well as on 'Lupe.
I havent walked around on the island more than the shore.
Sounds like a side trip.
