Having served 8 years in the Coast Guard, 4 of those being on the north shore of Long Island, I can't begin to tell you all the wader horror stories I've either been witness to. I've even had a couple of close calls myself having spent many winters chasing trout with a fly rod. When wearing the waterproof style chest waders, always leave one shoulder unstrapped so in the event you go under you can swim out of them. I have no experience wearing any type of waders while in a kayak so I can't speak on that.
