My son was sidelined for three months bc of a broken wrist. Took him on Memorial Day, and when we were prepping the gear the night before, I noticed that the battery was still showing full bars. I was in the garage earlier tonight, and I noticed my son had forgotten to turn off his vhf after our trip. So it's been on for a day and a half, and it's down only a bar. It doesn't have gps or dsc, and it doesn't have the range my standard horizon hx851 does (I can pick up chatter that he can't), but for a basic unit, it's been rock solid. Cons: flimsy belt clip, no wall charger.

Thanks for that.

That Uniden is a really nice hand held for the price.

It's pretty small: 2.49" W x 4.57" H x 1.53" D
The Icom I like is: 2.44"W ×3.82"H ×1.54" D

The weight is the same Uniden is 10.2 ounces vs the Icom 9.9, power output is the same and the waterproof rating is better JIS8 vs JIS7. If I did not have a backup M-88 I'd buy that Uniden in a heartbeat. In the Big Boat scene Icom radios are generally thought of as better/tougher. but I have had Uniden MC1010 on my skiff since I built it, it's seen a lot of miles in rough wet conditions and still works perfectly.

Good recommendation especially for a kayak.
