My wife said I have a big butt...
I said " Thank you!"
Finally, after helping newbies I got my first yak butt. Caught on a big Mack trap rig with two circle hooks in 80 ft. Felt small for the first 20 feet then he went nuts and tried to take me down to the bottom. I couldn't stop it with my thumb, tightened the drag and my thumb and got him stopped. After that I got my first experience gaffing while holding a pole...interesting. 36" and 18 pounds, same as my newbie caught a few weeks ago in the same spot. Good day on the water. Atta boy
that IS a nice butt.
Hey that thumb on the spool is a dangerous proposition. use your drag and let the rod do the work. those are some crazy fish to bring on board, so props to your for getting it done. Good work! |

Still haven't gotten one that large. Congrats! I guess I should spend a little time putting on the right rig and focus on a really nice BUTT. I mean other than the ones at the LJ landing.

Nice catch but in the future don't thumb the spool. Instead, ease down on the drag and let the fish do it's thing and pedal slowly as the fish is coming up to the surface. My theory on this is that the forward momentum calms the fish down because they feel like they are in their natural state (swimming), this also helps keep them flat when you're ready to gaff them.
Again, nice catch!!

Thanks for the advice. It was vertical when it came up and it was kind of hard to get the right angle to gaff it in the belly. I did it though, and a couple of whacks between the eyes took the fight out of it.

If I may be so brazen to say so, I have to agree with your wife!
A well deserved feast tonight! nom-nom-nom!

Curious?
What your wife has said for telling her she has a big butt?
