Newport, 8-7-15

Landwhale and I launched from the USCG beach at 7:00am. It was windy and cloudy and the water was dirty and in the low 70's. Almost no current the whole trip and the fishing was reflective of that.

We headed straight across to the peninsula to hide from the wind. We worked our way all the way down to the Pavillion for a few fish for Steve and none for me. We headed back and fished the channel edges and buoy line where I managed to get 2 fish. Both fish ate a 4" Paddlerz in Rootbeer/gold flake on a 3/8oz. red Warbait head. I fished a lot of different colors and styles, and except for the 2 at the end, all I got was short bit. The bites were rare and the fish were just not committing today. Hot Sauce was applied with some alacrity, though it didn't seem to make much difference. We were off the water by 11:00am.

We'll probably be headed back next week looking for redemption as Steve fared little better than myself.

Yes just not as frequently as Dana and LJ. I was talking to a guy at Turners who said someone caught a YT at the bait barge while he was getting bait a week or two ago. That's the first I've heard of YT being caught inside the mouth of the harbor at NP before. Obviously a fluke but it shows that they are there.

A buddy and I were out there yesterday as well. Same luck as you. We headed out to make bait and weren't having much luck. The conditions were snotty and we kept taking waves over the bow And sides so trolling wasn't worth the effort so we called it a day early.

We decided to head to a small lake close to home which shall remain nameless to protect the innocent that may or may not actually allow water craft (motorized or otherwise) on the water. We did hear from a couple people on shore that they have never seen anybody "on" the lake before.

My buddy was able to land a bucket mouth LMB weighing in at maybe an ounce and about three inches long. LOL

Have to agree with the snotty conditions and I would be the one in the Camo Prowler Trident. Fished all the way up to the Pavilion had alot of short bites ended up with 5 spotties for the day. Baits were all Zman Paddlez in Redbone, New Penny and Bad Shad on 3/8oz Warbaits with all Baits coated in Uni Butter, The slow retrieve and stopping when bit seemed to be the key to hooking fish.

YT by the bait barge? Dang. I fish right next to that barge for calico which are usually under sized. I was there the same day (on the 7th) and was catching calicos after i switch to squid bait. I got there around 11, the tide hit highest at 3 ish and macrels started to bite alot, my sabiki was pulling 2-3 makrels, wanted to go deep end but the conditions were rough. Im on a yellow outback.
