Well, obviously fix the wife thing first. After that, I second the notion of "if its not all the way through... don't screw with it."
I had an old OK Trident that got a rough ride due to a screwed up swim step on a boat. Looked like a shark got to it. Some of the deep cuts I flattened out with a heat gun and some spare material. The shallow cuts, all I did was make it look worse. Most importantly, you can deform the plastic by putting too much heat in an area for too long. If you haven't done it before, I wouldn't try on your new ride.
