great start did mine last summer old jet ski trailer i use for both my kayaks and a rubber raft very light

the chain was handy
use it to keep kayaks from sliding back in the high winds of mohove on way to bishop they are also strapped through the scuppers works great plant to put a steel mesh box under them for firewood and gear |

Some foam noodles on those cross bars and you'd be good to go for as long as you'd like(without having to do any more work).
