The day started off great when I decided to join Team Lollipop. I quickly got the Hobie ready and hit the water. I bypassed the anchovies at the bait barge and also decided to not make bait. I fished some plastics on the bottom near the kelp for just one short bass. I then rigged up a hard bait on a three way swivel and covered some areas that looked a bit fishy. I had no luck on the hard bait at all. Later, Mr. Greg Andrews gave us a tip on where we could find some sardines so a few of us quickly moved in to get some. I got a few pieces, changed my set-up, and on my second sardine (trap-rigged) I got my halibut. It was a bit nasty at times out there; I was forunate to land the hali since I almost lost it a couple of times at the gaff.
To my Team Lollipop Brothers we accomplished the mission. We were able to catch the "target" species and more importantly there will be no asterisk near the catch. Thanks for the lollipops Rob and it was a pleasure meeting everyone on the team. To the "Other" Team and their revenge on me....all I can say is, "Suck It!" ![]() ![]() |

i watched you guys in the machine. looked like tough fishing. I would have liked to have fished but couldn't pull it off.
Looking forward to participating at another event/venue. stupid wind. Yesterday was nice, but foggy. |

A great day overall. Yes Team Sewer was the winner.
My recap... It was too cool to pull into the parking lot and see a dozen guys already getting their kayaks all prepped. The scene of nothing but kayaks taking up an entire boat launch driveway was rad. While waiting at the bait barge for anorexic anchovies I got pooped on. Wind was moving at a pretty good clip and once we turned the corner around the point, I knew that there was a workout in store. What a misery. I'm a fan over a nice protected cove, a sand launch, and mild conditions overall. Nope. Not yesterday. A good indicator of the conditions to us all should have been the fact that not a single boat was being launched while we were all getting ready. After the long and daunting journey out to the point, with nothing biting, I turned and headed back towards the protection of the harbor. Stayed just outside, working the walls and the beach side for a bit, again for nothing. Linked up with Andrew and we did the entire loop of the private slips, trying to get a nibble off of something/anything. Nada for me all day. Still, meeting some totally new guys, putting some faces to names, and catching up with guys I already knew was great. Thanks Matt for the donuts, thanks Drake for working the bait barge, and thanks to all in attendance for making the trek from wherever. All in all, I had a great time.

Funny how just a few months ago there was so much friction between the north and the south, all it took was for everyone to understand that this is just fishing and just like that.......it was all gone!
I hope the friendships, tourneys and good times continue. pauses to wipe tear in left eye hits POST QUICK REPLY button

I got up to load the kayak in the truck, looked at the sky, saw how fast the clouds were moving and knew it was going to be nasty out there. So I went back to bed. Old guy proviledge...
BTW, Saturday was beautiful out there, and the chovies were the bait to have...

Thanks to sewer and lollipop for putting this together. As you can tell from the showing versus the tally of actual fish caught there was a lot of hype going into this event. Despite this, like always, I had alot of fun fishing, talking fish, and seeing the sexual tension between the sewer guys. Nice to see Eric and Jim again. Buskid did show up and I did see him cast what looked like a swimbait in the harbor. So I can testify that he is an actual active kayak fisherman. Hats of to Greg for paddling out and catching the winning fish.
Here are my accounts of what happened from the perspective of one of the guys that stuck around the mouth of the harbor. I unloaded my yak onto the ramp and went for a quick bathroom break and by the time I got back half the crew was rounding the corner of the breakwall heading north. I got my ration of lollipops from Robfish and I was on my way. Got to the bait barge and Drake and Robfish were hand picking their bait. I don't blame them as these 'chovies sucked balls. They'd die after 5 minutes of drifting. Caught a couple of calicos very early on at the mouth. Followed some birds to the south for nothing. Got hung up on a bunch of kelp and hooked a pelican with a treble after forgetting that my bait was on the surface. That was the sign to head in the harbor and fart around the bait barge. Ended the day early around 1-130ish as the rest of the crew were coming in. |
