Pismo area kayak fishing

I go up to Pismo and stay at the nice RV park there every November. I normally fish from the peir in the bay north of pismo (Avela maybe?) and catch rays and stuff. The one time I asked someone, they said they wouldn't take a kayak into the bay that time of year because it is shark season. Does anyone know if there is a big kayak fishing following up there? Several yrs ago a teacher swam w seals off of Avila & was killed by suspected Great white.She had the nerve to swim w/a pod of seals wearing a full black wetsuit.In all likelyhood thers's no danger.Just dont go swimming w/ seals.Really!
