They lost a customer when I can not take my PA 14, I tipped the crew good last year because I saw them work hard But someone must have complained.

A lot of the issue is that PA's take of a ton of space and dont fit in the racks. When you put those kayaks on the deck it makes it that much harder to walk around the boat and creates unsafe conditions for passengers and crew. Especially if there are a whole bunch of PA's. Even on trips where there are just 1 or 2 it really crowds up the deck which is already a problem on these trips due to the amount of gear that folks bring. The weight of the PA is only a small part of the reasoning, there are plenty of guys that load up their Malibus and make them just as heavy as a PA. All 5 trips we are running in 2013 filled up no problem without people being allowed to bring PA's. Obviously this change didnt hurt peoples decision to go and most everybody has been very understanding and have made other arrangements so that they could still attend. |

Your Oasis is still good. Although heavy and a big kayak it is still reasonable enough to put it into the racks. Same goes for any of the other larger kayaks (Ride 135, Xfactor, S-14, FnD). While large they are still a reasonable kayak size. The Oasis does push this envelope but there are very few of these that want to go on the trips and they do still fit in the racks. IF we allowed PA's there would easily be 6-10 of them per trip now days and lets be honest, a PA is not a kayak it is a boat.

on a related side note...
I know the June trip is full, but since I am bringing a tandem, if I wanted to bring my 9-yr old son, would I have to pay full price? I doubt he's up for it right now, but just curious and thinking about future trips. Thanks again.. -J |

Your best bet on that would be to Contact John/Shane on the Islander directly (Islander-Charters.com). We book in accordance to how many kayak spots there are available. The boat has far more bunks than what we book for and these guys do sell spots to Freedivers and such so I am sure they can figure something out for you.

They called stating that the good weather had shifted one day. They called everyone to move the departure date by one day so we return Monday. They were concerned about white cap conditions tomorrow. Sunday should be glass based on the reports

Wow...hope everyone can shift their schedules around to make it work...
It's probably a good idea from a safety standpoint, but damn! Some of us that have been on a couple of these trips have seen what could happen with bad weather and kayaks...Believe me you don't want to be "That Guy". Hopefully it'll work out for everyone that's going. Good luck!

Yeah that's right.
15 knots was in the forecast for tonight and tomorrow. Kayaks would get blown around. It would NOT be fun as it is fishing that place in nice conditions. John and Shane were able, and very kind, to accomodate moving the trip to Saturday night. Fish on Sunday. It is supposed to be much calmer. I guess only one guy couldn't make it, that's unfortunate. Everyone else loved the idea of fishing in nicer conditions the day after - back home on Monday, so you can go to work. This may be eppic trip. YT and WSB have been romoured off lately at the SCI. Halibut is permanent resident in that place... Standard spots from Pyramid Cove to the China Head, all grounds that will be fished on a kayak. Could be a lotta' fun. If it doesn't happen this weekend, I'm sure it'll go off on Memorial Weekend trip. I'm on board on that one, can't wait. |
