your local beach. . .

Pull out the trout rods. . .
buy berkley gulp bait cammo sand worms, 1/4 egg sinkers, #6 mosquito hooks (carolina-rigged)....
toss them out to the surf....
Catch and release/keep as many surf perch as you can...

You may even catch spot & yellow fin croaker, corbina, ?

It's an almost guaranteed method to catch. Besides, once the kids are done, they can dig in the sand. Or you fish and hook up and have the kids reel them in.
