I have an Impreza with this:

I have put borrowed kayaks on it no problem (two Outbacks) using one of these:

and the other direct to rack. I admit that was a little ghetto, but you can just get a couple kayak racks and that would be better.

As far as weight goes, I have put more gear in a Thule cargo box mounted to the same rack system than those two kayaks. Enough climbing gear to climb El Capitan and numerous other camping goods from fishing equipment to chairs and tents for two weeks worth. If I had to guess how much it weighed when I have it packed, I would say close to 300 pounds.
