Rockfish ID Request
https://imgur.com/a/5jkxi La Jolla, Thursday, off bottom somewhere around what some people call "the bump"? The gov site for fish ID is kinda vague, can't tell if this is a canary or cowcod, or some other species of rockfish. https://www.wildlife.ca.gov/fishing/...tfish/rockfish Before anyone accuses me of anything: I don't keep fish I can't ID, and he was too small to consider keeping regardless. I'm just curious what he was is all. Last edited by isghj; 10-15-2016 at 12:30 PM. Reason: broken image |

I honestly hadn't considered copper, the white is less pronounced than I expected, but it does seem to match the description.

Copper gets my vote too. When I go out looking for rockfish I keep my phone handy with the screen captures of the CADFW instructional on identifying the restricted rockfish. The phone hangs on my neck in a clear dry bag, so it's easy to get to in a hurry.

Copper rockfish. Note the white blotches on the upper back and dorsal fin.
