i can't remember a summer where I've seen more stuck cars in the sand. The 'sunset zombies' are pretty bad this year too....you know the kind, the ones that stand in the middle of the launch just staring at the sky and ocean, totally oblivious to the fact that you are revving your rig, trying to get their attention so the will M T F out of the Way!

I was there yesterday dealing with stuck humanity. I blasted through the sand before being called for it from the lifeguards. They said the day before a young girl was struck by a car trying to get through to the beach launch and now they are restricting access to only 4-wheel drive vehicles. There was also talk of closing the launch because of all the hassles.

AWE jeeeeezus......seriously it doesn't take that much skill to not get stuck...and more often than not its the hillbillies with the crew cab 4x4 f450 powerstroke diesels with bling, bling rims and 36" tires that get stuck or wreck the launch for everyone else!!! A little common sense goes a long way when driving at the launch....

Last week, you can't see all of them in this photo but there were two trucks and one Camry all stuck at the same time. Almost as entertaining as watching rental kayaks on a chest high surf day.

Actually i think the little girl was hit last summer but this brings up a very good point...DRIVE SLOW IN THE SAND!!!! peds have the "right of way" on the beach.
Recently I have seen way to many kayak fishermen haulin A$$ thru the sand on a crowded weekend afternoon often revving the engine, peeling out while yelling/honking at women and children. The people on the beach have no idea that we are trying not to get stuck, they just think the we are a bunch of jackasses. So please, IF YOU DON'T HAVE 4x4 or U CAN'T IDLE THRU THE SAND THEN PARK IN THE GREEN AND USE YOUR WHEELS!!! |

Is this one of those common sense things that Matt was referring to? |

(no reason to get stuck in the first place) BUT-> if yer stuck in the sand: Let almost ALL the air out of your tires... very few real sand stucks that cant be solved by this little trick trust me been there done that and I do mean almost ALL that air then go slow ...presto unstuck then go up the street and refill those tires,(before getting on the fwy...) This public service annoucement was brought to you by a guy who drives a: 1 ton ford crew cab 4x4 Diesel & Ford Excursion 4x4 Diesel & 1979 jeep cj7 (locked and loaded rock crawler) oh and a 2001 plymouth grand voyager mini van (dont ask) and I am a native California (not a red neck) well my great grandparents were from Oklahoma, Texas and the Dakotas...sooo I guess... |

Here's an idea. Since it has become so crowded at the shores, maybe the City ought to consider opening up another launch site on a protected beach which does not get many human visitors. The Children's Pool comes to mind.

the key to driving on loose sand is to pretend there's an egg between your foot and the gas pedal. that said I have a FWD and even I won't risk that crap in the condition it's been in lately. The kids who work for LJ Kayak say about 20 people a day are getting stuck in it. If you have high clerance and a 2WD vehicle - foget it, bring wheels.
