Charged up my scanner and was able to pick up a transmission from the radio - but it was only across the living, but I'm sure it is fine at a further distance.
Found the manual, thanks to the Internets. I read on-line that the squelch knob can seize up with the volume knob - common occurrence. Thanks for the deal.
