No person shall take finfish from any boat or other floating device in ocean waters without having a landing net in possession or available for immediate use to assist in landing undersize fish of species having minimum size limits; the opening of any such landing net shall be not less than eighteen inches in diameter.

Mazilla- read again. Not one or the other. If fish is undersized, you must have a net to assist in landing.

If you are checked by the DFG and you have ANY species of fish that has a minimum size limit you must have a net on board your boat. Most of our fish have size limits now, even things like scullpin, cabezon, and sheephead. YT and bonito don't have a size limit until you reach 5 fish. Be on the safe side, those folding nets don't take up much space and can save you an expensive ticket.

Let's clear this up guys. It states "No person shall take finfish...", it doesn't say fish with size limits. The rule is made to also cover bycatch that may or may not be fish with size limits.
