3rd of July

The kelp looked fantastic this morning, with bait everywhere and obvious signs of predators. Unfortunately, the predators were mostly mammals, sharks, barracudas, calicos, and jumbo macs.

A lone seal (not a sea lion) was mercilessly devouring every bait I put out, no matter how long I waited or how far I moved. As the wind picked up, I gave up and started the trek back to the launch. That's when I met Gabe and we chatted about launching in OB. Nice to meet you, hopefully we can get out there sometime.

The kelp was looking less and less fishy. A bit farther east and I finally put out a bait again, my last one. Sure enough, a few minutes later and that damn seal has my bait again. I let it run just in case, and what do you know... it's actually a fish! Not a big one, but I'll take it.

Have a happy 4th and be safe this weekend.

That's welcoming news of sorts. Thanks for the report, what did the fish go 10-12 ish?

I was thinking about pounding out the Calicos this weekend. Good to hear the kelp fish were active.

That's about what I was guessing, but I never weighed it.

Hi Gabe,
Good fishing with you on Thursday. I am happy that Patrick caught a YT because it was definitely on the slow side. Sorry Patrick didn't get a chance to meet you but I think you launched about the same time. I think you got out quickly while I had a delay with the surf that kept pushing me backwards.

Glad you got one. I fished on the 4th. Had a big WSB take the bait and make a few runs then spit the bait back out. Other than that a slow day. You must have fed the sea lions on Thursday because Friday they left us alone. We saw some...they just didn't bother us. Congrats
