Had the same problem... just followed your fix... much smoother....

Now just need to find the time to get back out on the water...

I bought the sabiki rod from Bass Pro Shops for only $50, nvr had a problem with it.

Maybe putting a few drops of 30 min epoxy on the end of a stick and placing it on the inside of the rod tip where that flange is would smooth it out. Roll it to distribute it evenly. repeat for the outside.

I thought of that, but you can't put it on the inside of the rod. The metal fiting is in the shaft, not the tip. That picture of the inside shows the end after I cut it off.

You would only be able to put it on the outside. It would solve the problem with them going in, but not going out.
