Montona De Oro 7-15-17

So been busy and out of town for the last 6 weeks for the most part and honestly pretty sure this was my first trip on the yak in the ocean this year and its already JULY...

So got off work at 3pm on Friday and made the 5+ hour drive south and got home and loaded my gear and my younger brothers gear into the truck and made sure all my stuff was good to go. Recently moved so knew I had no clue where the batteries to my fishfinder were located. So had RyanImpreza grab me a spare battery. So went to bed around midnight and got up a 3:30 to make the drive up to MDO to meet the guys.

About 10 of us were gonna be launching. Conditions were not ideal by any means on the forecast. 6-8ft swell with 10-20MPH winds. I was optimistic about even heading out but send sure lets give it a go.

Arrived to be the last guy in the parking lot at 5:05am.

Sun just starting to come up but still needed a head lamp to set up. Pulled the yaks off the rack and started the simple set up.
Went full KISS today.
Fishfinder would not turn on, so was a little ticked off about that considering the fog was relatively thick could not see out the cove from the beach. (OHH YEAH AT THE AOTY AWARDS IT DID NOT WORK EITHER, MENTAL NOTE FIX THAT)

We launched to ankle slappers. Started to paddle out to meet Dogpound at the mouth of the cove jigging over a couple rocks.

[

We started bouncing around for some structure and the drift was pushing us pretty good to the south, and we were having a hard time finding any spots that wanted to produce.

Once Ryanimpreza was on the water he scooted past us without us even seeing him to a little deeper water.

Think it was about the time I got my first keeper Ling in about 80 feet of water. Solid 26incher.

So we decided to head deeper looking for Ryan and the rest of the crew. Heard Ryan screaming like a school girl and started to bee line it to the sound and once we get there see him bent pretty well.

Said he was on something big that kept pulling drag. So after a couple minutes he pulls in a FAT LING.

Part that sucks is pictures do no justice for this guy.

We fished the spot for about another hour and each pulled a few fish off it including a couple short lings and smaller rockfish.

SELFIE ALERT ...

1st kayak keeper canary...

We started to head in fishing along the way and I was able to find a school of blues and probably caught and released a dozen or so in 5 minutes and kept 4 of the larger ones for the freezer.

Once on the beach it was official RyanI won the Money Between Friends and we all heads down tail between our legs handed over the cash...

Till Next Time...

I love the central coast. I will be heading up there soon with the family - first to MDO then to Limekiln. I may bring the kayak.

Thanks for the post. Quality fish!
Used to live and fish up north (Arcata) and loved the rockfish action.
