LJ PM 8/21

Launched about 1:30 pm. Minor waves, a bit of a breeze which was nice as it cooled things down. Made 4 spanish and 1 greenback pretty quickly and arc'd my way out to the NW corner. Seemed to be very little current. No surface action but did see a school of small bonito swimming 10-15 ft down.

Had the greenback high and a spanish low with the sabiki also out, probably in 100 ft of water (no electronics) and was thinking about going shallower when the flyline twitched a little. Took the clicker off and gave it some line; love that feeling of the free spool when the fish takes off. Set the hook and settled in. Immediately starts to head to the shallows to presumably find kelp. I must have been out deep when I hooked it as I took quite the sleigh ride before it settled into a zone where the kelp was. Cleared the other lines which was quite the shit show; dunno how you all do that well.

Had it hooked on 30 lb fluoro leader with 65 lb braid. Worked it for probably 30 minutes total with kelp strands popping every 5 mins or so. It came up 3 times and never gave up. Final got the gaff in and the job was done.

Didn't see any other action besides bass. The fish gods smiled on me. Didn't get a weight but it measured 47 inches.

Congrats, on the nice yellowtail. Good size, haven't seen many homeguards caught lately. Most are younger and slimmer in the 15-17 lb range. See the marks on the FF Most trips, but haven't been"in the right place at the right time " lately.
