yoyoing

I had a quick question on yoyoing LJ from the yak. I don't have a fishfinder, and the few times ive tried yoyoing ive gotten it stuck in kelp about 15-20 feet down. Without a fishfinder, how do you know if its "safe" to drop?

Most yo yoing in LJ is done on the edge of the canyon, well off the kelp. If you keep getting stuck only 20' down head to deeper water. Most yo yo yt are hooked a couple cranks off the bottom in deep >80' of water. I don't have a ff right now, so I don't always know if its safe to drop, but I do have a general idea of the kelp line based on the line up. Most of the kelp grows in the shallower water.
