Basic LJ question

Fished LJ for the first time yesterday and had a blast. Only a large mac on the iron but was fun just to paddle around and meet some guys on the water. I noticed most guys launched and headed to there fishing grounds. Do most of you guys make bait at your spots? I went to the pier and picked up a mac and a smelt and then headed out. Just wondering what the prefered method is. I'd rather just hit the open water and make bait there while throwing irons or whatever.

Al,

Good effort on a long drive. The pier is always optional. Bait is much easier to find in the spring/summer along the reserve buoy line than it is this time of year. The pier is almost a guarantee on bait. Many bait up in the dark near the pier and get out deep where they want fish so they can have baits out at greylight.

Then again, most of the winter fish are on iron, so you can simpify in the winter by just hucking lures and skip bait all together.

The pier is the only place to make bait in the dark. If you want bait and you can launch early enough, go to the pier. Some days (most days lately) I don't feel like dealing with bait or the sabiki so I just go straight out and throw iron.

Thanks for the info gentleman. It was nice getting out there and taking everything in. You definately need to put in time on the water. Wish I was closer to put in the time but long drives and overnite stays is the alternative. I'll see you on the water soon.

hey al, i noticed you had a real nice fish finder on that nice ship (x factor) bait is plentyful most every were in L.J. timing is key on yellowtail hookups and other big fish. I would use that nice fish finder to find bait and dont waste too much time at the bridge. nice meeting ya friday! (Gabe)
