Using a GoPro HD Camera - Kayak Fishing Adventures on Big Water’s Edge

I just purchased a GoPro HD camera and would like to know if anyone has used them and has any advice when using them while fishing? I also purchased the chest harness so I can wear the camera.

I hated the time it took to get my other digital camera out and set-up to take a shot while fighting a fish, without dropping or getting the camera soaked. Being able to mount the GoPro and it's ruggedness seemed the answer I was looking for.

Thanks in advance for any information on using this camera.

Sweet camera and easy to use with decent quality. I used mine on the head strap and on a 4 foot PVC pipe behind me (better setup).....very cool for video and still frame shots.....make sure to have some sort of leash or floatation device set up with it..although probably not necessary with chest strap.....I donated mine to the Pacific but will be getting a replacement soon

If you mtn bike, it works well with the helmet harness (chest strap would be even better) and it also works well hooked to the helmet snowboarding

I also put mine on a ~4 foot piece of pvc and stuck it in a rod holder in my crate, just far enough away I can reach it to turn it on. I also used a couple of bungee/deck connections to secure it to boat. I also used some tape at the bottom and top where the pvc sits in the rod holder to make it more stable. No big landings on it yet, maybe soon. Good Luck.

I hope to try it out this Friday on the ocean. I have a 4GB card in it now, but I am thinking about moving up to a 16GB.

I also do a lot of running, so it will be neat to see how this works while running!

No YT or WSB for me as well with the camera........only a Thresher

My Avatar photo is with the GoPro on my head C&R a Dorado on the East Cape.....pretty good quality and the wide lens is great

What size SD card do you use? I have a 4GB but I do not know how much video this can hold.

I was only using a 2GB and I would carry a spare.......I thought 2 GB was the biggest you could use (just checked manual for mine and 2 GB is maximum) The 2 GB could hold approx. 60 minutes of video

I don't have one of these, but I would think it would be the same as cameras--it all depends upon the resolution and size of the picture you take.

Here's a chart I found showing the recording time for a 32gb SDHC card at different settings:

Average recording times (using 32GB SD card):

1080p (30 fps): 4h 21m
960p (30 fps): 5h 26m
720p (60 fps): 4h 21
720p (30 fps): 8h 09m
WVGA (60 fps): 8h 09m

With the cost of SD cards pretty cheap now, I'd put the 4gb in a DSLR or point-n-shoot and at least double that size for your video. I recently picked up an 8gb Class 6 SDHC card from Fry's on sale for $15.00. Shop around since they're always going on sale.

I was just reading an article that stated the older ones had a maximum of 4gb, after a firmware upgrade. At 32gb, the new ones have the largest capacity of this type of video camera. Time to upgrade! http://pointofviewcameras.com/blog/p...-camera-review

From the same article: "The previous GoPros only shot at a 512x384 but the new GoPro HD Heros offer a range of high def options and frame rates.
1080p = 1920x1080 pixels (16:9), 30 fps, 15 Mbit/s data rate
960p = 1280x960 pixels (4:3), 30 fps, 12 Mbit/s data rate
720p = 1280x720 pixels (16:9), 60 fps, 15 Mbit/s data rate
720p = 1280x720 pixels (16:9), 30 fps, 8 Mbit/s data rate
WVGA = 848x480 pixels (16:9), 60 fps, 8 Mbit/s data rate "

Therefore, your one hour of record time for 2gb is not the same for the newer models.

The HD can use up to 32 GB, but it sounds like I should be good with the 4 GB card.
