How to rig live squid? - Kayak Fishing Adventures on Big Water’s Edge

Giving it a shot this weekend. I bought a squid jig, but have never fished with live squid. How should I rig up?

Put a hook in it.

Most go through the top of the mantle. Double hook rigs are a good idea as well. The squid may be all gone by now. Watch the weather, supposed to be very breezy and snotty this weekend.

Yeah, I just checked the weather. Looks like it should be crappy.

Doesn't hurt to know how to rig live squirts for future reference. Thanks.

Is this generally a once a year thing or multiple squid "breedings" throughout the winter?

Seems like a once a year thing, but it could come in waves. Dec 05 was really good, and I think I remember stumbling on some squirts with Adi in late 06. The squid are around here and there throught the year but I think the egg laying is a once a year event, at least in LJ. But I could be wrong.

Last year it was early March when we were loading up on them. (?!?)

Makes me wonder if their spawning season changes season to season, or their migrations vary, or maybe they're around "doing it" for a couple of months??

I remember last year there was that big Saturday on February 17th... If that was squid related, I wonder what they had in common?

Oh yeah. But I don't think we caught anything with them, did we?

This year was thicker than any I remember, though the Dec 05 run was pretty good.

I routinely cruise over those numbers throughout the winter/spring and most of the time it's a desert, or spanish. I wish the squid were a consistent year round bait option, but greenies are easier to keep on the hook.

Anybody know if the humbolts are still being caught offshore?
