Yep, need a stouter rod when you are bouncing 8-20 ounces of lead.

I have a 4 foot panga stick I wrapped with a roller stripper and tip just for bouncing on the kayak. Having the line closer to the side of the kayak helps minimize the torque that pedaling/paddling effort needs to compensate for.

I'm just not a successful halibut fisherman on most days

I have wrapped the propeller more times than I can remember...i fish up to three rods you got to stay focused
and watch your graph for anything that might tangle the bounce ball.

I guess I've never used the octopus hooks, that point looks like it would be hard to set. I think the point would be better in line with the rest of the hook. Of course I haven't caught a legal butt yet so what do I know.

I googled octopus hooks and none show the point bent over like that. I think yours are flawed. I think if you try to straighten it the tip may break off

Think I'll add a treble hook and make it a trap rig to be safe or just use one treble hook

Was scratching my head for a bit. When I wrote "that I wrapped" I meant that I built it for bounceballing. I usually bounceball from that stick and have a longer, more sensitive one out the other side with either banana sinker and leader or dropshot further back out of range of the bounceball rig.

I stand corrected, but I don't think I'll use them

SOAB......./solo....3/10 return.

The berm was easier then the sand...reason hardpack.
Plenty of mackerel for no bites, tangled my bounce ball lost my canon ball...wrapped my trolling motor prop with mackerel flys 1/2 hour to cut line lose off prop shaft after removing blades while on the water .time to say adios amigos im sure my spots were hammered by all the silence peeps:spam
And more:My phone been ringing off the hook by telemarketing tight lines
They say keep Wi-Fi turned off on your cellphone for security reasons.Running the point beats beats sitting around waiting to die

just keep bouncing

even though they're mostly on the bottom, they move around a lot. don't get too discouraged - just keep bouncing. id make mental note of that first spot and try to go back there on a similar tide.

imo short bite and missed hookup are terms that are synonymous w/ halibut fishing, especially if you're bit by little ones. if using live bait, i like to let my live bait slide through whatever is holding the weight, so i can let the butt attack and swallow bait. i just have to be quick on the rig as soon as i feel even a light set of taps, drop it into free spool. if i miss it, try again. i've gone back 2 min later and caught fish i just missed. i prefer to fish one rod really carefully than to have 2 or more rods out. and personally, i don't like treble stingers on live bait, but whatever works for you.

of course they're known to pop off at the boat too. shake it off (pun intended) and get back to it.

thanks for post. got me interested again in targeting one of the tastiest fish.

and really cool rig! that'll keep you in shape.

What does taking on "the berm" mean? do you mean the hump next to the sidewalk?

Or is it the name of a fishing area?

I don't think you are referring to the sand berms set up to contain PCB's in the bay, are you?

Ahso. Thanks.

Also wondering if it might be underwater berm structure from dredging operations.

The mind wanders
