Afternoon Winds At Corona Del Mar?

Hey dudes,

Is the Corona Del Mar kelp typically too windy to fish around noon? I've never fished there before and was thinking about going out there tomorrow, but probably getting a late start. I've been looking at the forecasts all year and it seems like NPH/CDM always has greater wind than say Dana Point for example. Is this a place you have to fish early if you plan to go out to the kelp?

Best regards,

Dave

Dave every time I've gone out to CDM or Dana Point on Saturdays, It seems like the wind picks up like clock work around noon, which Is why Im off water or close to jetty around noon so Im not dying fighting winds (I paddle and not peddle) But you can pay close attention to which way the wind is blowing as they usually wont change. You can paddle out into the wind first thing then you can use it to get back a little easier. Post a report asap as Im heading out there this Saturday morning. Good luck!

I grew up in Hacienda Heights LOL!!

If you're in your early 30s we might one another! I'm paddling a cumbersome kayak so I need to be cautious.

I'd advise an early start. Newport seems to never have any fairly calm days anymore. Expect at least 10kts of wind heading back if you don't do so by 1200.

My wife just had a baby a couple weeks ago and I've been taking my bigger kids to school while I'm on leave, so an early start is off the table. If it comes down to it I'll just stay inside, fish for bass, and troll my frozen squid around.

Unless the santa ana's are blowing you can pretty much count on wind out of the N - NW every day. Heading down to CDM is awesome, if there is wind its at your back... really enjoy fishing there but can be a bitch to paddle back to harbor if you get too far south and it picks up.

Well, I'm just leaving home now @ 10AM and won't be on the water until around Noon I bet. Looking like I probably won't be fishing too far from the launch and will probably have to anchor up. Oh well, better than a day of work I guess!

Thanks for the advice. I'll have to try another day when I don't have as many obligations.

Or get a sail! lol I learned that the hard way after doing 10 miles yesterday. Even though I jam in a revo I was still a little beat afterwards.
