Newport, 4-14-14

Launched at 6:00am with Landwhale from the USCG beach. Water was cold (56º-60.5º) and very clear. Air was cold and clear too. No wind to speak of when we launched, but a light offshore did start blowing around 8:00. It blew until we got off the water at 10:00.

We started off fishing a shoal of eel grass and had a good drift with the incoming tide. I managed 3 legals and 3 shorts in the first hour or so. Then it just died. We paddled around some looking for warmer water, which we found. But, there was no current. No fish bit. Left that area and found current again, but cold water. Nothing again. Back to put in some time in the warmer water. Nothing. We finished off where we started and I managed another short and another legal. Called it early since the tide was slack and didn't want to wait at least a 1/2hr for the water to start moving again. Then I would've had to leave shortly after the water started moving anyways.

While I tried a lot of different colors in a few different styles there was really only one bait today. The slip jig with a Grass Hopper skirt and either a 5" Red Bone Zman Paddlerz, or Baby Brushhog in Bull Frog. I also got one bass on a C-rigged Zoom Super Fluke in Bait Fish. Hot Sauce for taste of course.

Highlight of the day for me was that I only missed 2 fish. Usually I get about 50%, so 80% is quite an improvement. Yeah, I know I'm slow. I've been that way since I started with artificials. Anyone know how to increase reaction speed? As always, it was a pleasure to fish with Steve.
