Your go to for YT when you can't make bait

Just a quick question. What is your favorite trolling lure for YT if you can't make bait? I had a guide suggest a rapala x-rap 15 or 20. I bought one of each and tried the 15 when I ran out of macs. It didn't get bit and was a bit of a workout to keep it up to speed. Has anyone else had success with this? What else do you troll? I prefer trolling as it allows me to cover more ground when I'm not marking schools.

They are easier to troll because the lip is narrower than the Xrap. Have had good luck with the dorado and bonita patterns. 7"

I don't know about using it with kayak due to lower speed; but with a slow motorized boat, My go to is,

Salas 6X jr. particularly in scrambled egg color. White and blue plus white and mint is great too.

A rig consisting of a 3 way swivel works very well.

30" from the 3 way to 3-4 oz.sinker,

Five feet (5) of flou. leader to Rapela lure.

The 6X Jr. maybe too heavy for kayak. Regular which is used as surface iron should be better.

I'll give the iron a try. I would assume a surface iron would work better than a yo yo iron. Is that correct?

Ive trolled swim baits from a kayak with some success. Caught lots of different fish, including YT. Swimbaits are nice cause they don't make much drag and swim at any speed. Even if you stop a sinking swimbait is still fishing. Mike

I caught a 26 pound yellowtail on the first use of a savage gear top water greenback lure. I forgot the model name on package, but it is about the size of an 7 inch greenback. It has also gotten lots of bonito.

Once I'm able to get back out on the water, I plan to use a Rapala (I've been stocking up on) CD-18/22/26 to troll with if I ever find I can't make bait and I'm too lazy to chuck 'n' wind the iron.
