7/31 Afternoon Session

Been wanting to try the afternoon bite for a while so made the trip down from OC. How different it is to find parking. Had to park 3 blocks up.

Launched at 3:30 to small sets. Crystal clear water with easily visible Leo's cruising in about 4 ft. of water.

Not many yak's out but met Paul in his Hobie Adventure. He was nice enough to hand off a couple Spanish, a sardine and some dead squid. Thanks Paul! Bait was tough for a while. Made about 6 more Spanish and set out to find my first YT in front of the condo at about 90-100 ft. 2.5 hrs of NADA....when ZZZZZZZZZZZ. Hook was set and off to the races. I was already thinking of how great it was going to be paddling back in having to worry about where to put my first nice yak fish when after only about a minute of bendo....Instant slack. DAMN! Pulled it up to find my rig intact. WTF? Instantly put another pornstar Spanish down and before he gets too far line is screaming off again. YES! Count to 5 and hookset......missed. Fed another two baits in this same fashion only to wonder why I suck at fishing so much. Look over my shoulder to see a sea lion smiling at me. SOB!

Still don't know if the first one was a dog that got hooked for a minute or two or the right kind that got away. That was it other than some pencil cudas and midget calicos that attacked my Sabiki. Paddled in after dark. Probably not the smartest thing to do when you are by yourself but made the uneventful landing through the surf right up to the street at high tide

I see the same guys on here "catching" and not just fishing and wonder how they do it? Although it is beautiful in LJ and being on the water is great, that paddle, load and drive is much longer when coming back empty handed.
